The Open Championship
I have been remiss, last time I updated this, it was Masters time. This week sees the British Open. So much for the U.S. Open! Angel who? Apologies to Mr. Cabrera and I’m sure he cares –
Anyway, on to the real Open Championship -the one that doesn’t need a prefix, as all who live outside of the borders of the good old US of A will recognize the Open championship for what it is. A championship that requires more than towering drives and lob wedges when one is a mere ten inches from the greens edge. Where putting from twenty, thirty yards or even more, is not just prudent, but obvious. Where a gentle summer’s breeze - would (as they say in Australia) blow a dog off its chain and a passing shower that would render play impossible in other climes, makes for “a sensible day of golf laddie”.
Carnoustie has been rendered somewhat tamer than the last time it made its may onto the Open roster. Seems that “Carnasty” has been replaced by a more sublime “Carneasy”. Bit of a pity I think as I quite enjoy seeing the best of the best struggle against par instead of beating it senseless. I wonder if we may see another Jean Van DeVelde performance. You have to admit it made for great TV – high drama mixed with comedy and ultimately tragedy. We shall see and I for one will be glued to the “telly” for the fours days.
The ladies are up next at St. Andrews. What a wonderful venue and high time too. It’s a great recognition for the girls to be playing at “the home of golf” and should make for a wonderful tournament with the best of all tours strutting their stuff about the hallowed links. The last two Ladies majors have been riveting affairs and produced some fantastic golf with the girls showing that ladies golf can be every bit as entertaining and the standard just as high as the men’s. Ladies golf globally has shot ahead in the past couple of years and is growing proportionately, especially here in Asia. Good stuff and great for the game.
Well folks, until next time – keep it straight and if you can’t – best you come and see me.
Cheers.
